Senior Clinician and Non-Equity Supervising Partner, Ottawa River Integrative Mental Health
Hi, I’m David Hesidence, a Registered Psychotherapist. I believe that healing begins in a space where we are met with respect, compassion, and understanding — not judgment. My approach to therapy is grounded in the belief that every person deserves to be seen and heard as they are, and that reaching out for support is an act of courage and hope.
For over a decade, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside individuals facing many different kinds of challenges — depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis, and the often-complex experiences of substance use. I know how much stigma and misunderstanding can surround these issues. But I also know, both professionally and personally, that struggle does not define a person’s worth.
As someone with over 30 years of continuous sobriety and lived experience in recovery, I come to this work with deep empathy. I don’t believe in labeling people as “defective” or “lacking willpower.” I believe in your inherent strength, your capacity for change, and your right to be met with kindness.
My clinical focus includes working with individuals who are navigating mental health concerns, substance use issues, or both. I have a special interest in supporting those whose experiences cross between these two worlds — individuals who too often encounter systems of care that treat these issues separately. In my practice, I embrace the importance of addressing mental health and substance use together, seeing the whole person, not just the diagnosis.
I also work with family members and loved ones who are concerned about someone in their life who may be struggling. I believe that families play an important role in the journey of healing, and I offer support to help build motivation, foster understanding, and strengthen connection.
Above all, I strive to create a therapeutic relationship that feels safe, collaborative, and hopeful. If you are ready to begin this work — or even just curious about what support could look like — I would be honored to meet you where you are.

About Me
My professional journey has taken me through many corners of the mental health field, and each stage has shaped how I show up as a therapist today. I’ve had the privilege of working in adolescent and adult substance-use treatment, child and adult mental health, psychotherapy, and in independent contracts supporting Indigenous communities, organizations, and school boards. These experiences have taught me that healing looks different for everyone—and that therapy must honour the whole person, their story, and the systems they move through.
I draw on a wide range of evidence-based approaches, including trauma-informed practice, cognitive-behavioural therapy, EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), couples and family therapy, critical incident stress debriefing, and Positive Behavioural Supports (PBS). My style is integrative, collaborative, and deeply client-centred, grounded in compassion and respect for each person’s lived experience.
My Path as an Educator & Leader
Alongside my clinical work, I spent 18 years as a Professor and Coordinator of the Social Service Worker Program, and later as Associate Dean at Confederation College. Teaching and mentoring new practitioners has been one of the most meaningful threads of my career. These roles strengthened my ability to bridge theory and practice, foster critical reflection, support developing clinicians, and uphold professional ethics through example.
This blend of direct practice, teaching, and leadership has shaped me into a therapist who values teamwork, lifelong learning, and service to the broader community of care.
Why I’m Drawn to Ottawa River Integrative Mental Health
Ottawa River’s commitment to holistic, evidence-based, and compassion-driven mental health care resonates deeply with my own values. I am passionate about providing therapy that honours the whole person—mind, body, relationship, and community—and I see that same dedication reflected in the Ottawa River team.
I’m excited to bring my experience, warmth, and collaborative spirit to this environment. Above all, I feel honoured to walk beside individuals, families, and communities as they navigate challenges, rediscover strength, and move toward healing and growth.

Psychotherapist (Supervised Practice)
Supervised by Senior Clinician David Hesidence, MS, RP
As a mature clinician with a diverse life experience — including a previous career in government and years immersed in high-performance sport — I bring a grounded, compassionate, and deeply human perspective to psychotherapy. My own journey of recovery and transformation informs my work, allowing me to meet you with empathy, authenticity, and non-judgment.
Guided by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS), I create a warm, supportive space where you can safely explore your inner world. Drawing from Buddhist psychology, I incorporate mindfulness and acceptance-based practices to help you reconnect with your values, cultivate awareness, and move toward a more balanced and meaningful life.
My clinical focus includes addiction, anxiety, depression, and anger, with a particular interest in how these challenges intersect and shape a person’s overall mental health. I work holistically, addressing emotional, spiritual and psychological distress while helping you build resilience, insight, and a renewed sense of agency.
I believe we are all born inherently good, but through life’s hardships and conditioning, we learn to see ourselves otherwise. Many of the struggles we face — addiction, shame, anxiety — are not the true problem, but rather attempts to soothe deeper pain. My role is to help you relate differently to that pain, to transform your relationship with suffering into one of compassion, acceptance, and growth.
I work primarily with men from all walks of life, including fathers, who are navigating challenges such as depression, anxiety, addiction, or anger. Many of my clients feel disconnected, ashamed, or overwhelmed — burdened by expectations, responsibilities, or a sense that they’re not good enough. They long to feel more grounded, present, and confident. Together, we explore these patterns with curiosity and compassion, helping you reconnect with what truly matters and create a life aligned with your values.
I have completed training and supervision in Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and my work is IFS-informed. I integrate principles of Buddhist psychology and mindfulness into my practice and have specialized training in substance use and recovery. I also hold Indigenous Cultural Sensitivity certification from the Wabano Centre in Ottawa.
As both a former high-performance athlete and a competitive hockey coach, I understand the unique pressures of sport and performance. I also have a strong interest in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy (PAP), particularly in harm reduction, preparation, and integration for individuals exploring plant medicines to address treatment-resistant depression, PTSD, and end-of-life distress.
If you’re ready to move beyond self-judgment, shame, or fear — and begin a journey toward greater connection, peace, and purpose — I invite you to reach out for a free 20-minute consultation. Contact the Ottawa River Integrative Mental Health Care Coordinators to get started, and let’s begin this process of healing and transformation together — one mindful step at a time.

Anxiety, stress, anger, fear, grief, and depression show up differently for everyone. You might be feeling overwhelmed or isolated, unsure of where to start. Your self-talk might be very negative even if you’re “doing great” on paper. You might be avoiding people and places, or struggling with conflict or big life changes.
I also work with people who are having a complicated relationship with their body - maybe it’s due to a medical condition or accident, insomnia, struggling with eating, or trying to follow health advice that involves hard changes. Maybe your loved one is unwell and you’re trying to provide support while keeping yourself together.
I help people build their skills and self-awareness in order to change unhelpful cycles. I worked in Ottawa, Yukon, Calgary, and Vancouver at diabetes, cardiac rehab, heart transplant, and mental health clinics. I’ve also been a health entrepreneur co-founder for 20 years and understand the high’s and low’s of carrying a high level of responsibility.
I am honoured to do the work I do, supporting people to live with agency, autonomy, and connection. Working with people ranging in age from young adults to 80+ has been a huge gift in understanding just how short life is. You deserve to be heard, and to feel better.

My intention as a therapist is to help you overcome barriers to change, open up to experience, and increase trust in yourself. Together we will shed light on how your emotions, thoughts, and behaviours make sense, so that you can improve your self-understanding and make meaningful choices that allow you to grow.
There is no wrong place to start and I will meet you right where you are in your process. For so many of us, anger, shame, sadness, and fear were necessary defenses against past experiences. I will meet you from a non-judgmental place so that you can safely observe these thoughts and emotions and learn to relate to yourself and others in healthier ways.
My training primarily focused on ACT and process-based CBT approaches, but included psychodynamic and DBT orientations as well, esp. in working with challenges related to personality.

Hello, I’m Yastika Kamboj — a gentle, compassionate presence dedicated to walking alongside you as you navigate life’s challenges and move toward healing, growth, and greater self-understanding.
I know that reaching out for support takes courage. My intention is to offer a safe, respectful space where you can feel seen, heard, and accepted just as you are — while also being gently supported toward the changes you long for.
My approach to therapy is rooted in evidence-based, compassion-focused practices. I draw from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), and Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), weaving these together in a way that honors your unique experiences, values, and goals. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, low mood, self-criticism, body image concerns, relationship difficulties, or life transitions, my focus is on supporting you in building a kinder relationship with yourself and with the world around you.
I also provide psychological assessments to help bring clarity and understanding to the challenges you may be facing.
I hold a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from McGill University and have clinical experience across private practice, college mental health, and university counselling settings. Currently, I am honored to be practicing as a Third Wave Psychology Fellow and Psychologist Supervised Therapist under the mentorship of Dr. Kimberly Sogge, as I complete my registration as a psychological associate with the College of Psychologists of Ontario.
If you are ready to begin this journey toward greater ease, self-compassion, and well-being, I would be honored to support you.

Maybe you’re the kind of person who can look like you’re doing “fine” on the outside—showing up, getting things done—while inside it feels like your mind won’t switch off, your body won’t fully relax, or something just isn’t working the way it should. You might be dealing with anxiety or panic, intrusive thoughts or rigid patterns, low mood, trauma stress responses, or the wear-and-tear of chronic stress.
Maybe you’re also carrying something harder to name: pressure to perform, academic stress, big transitions, or the strain of feeling caught between cultures, identities, expectations, or communities.
And if you’re honest, part of what’s exhausting is not knowing whether what you’re experiencing is “just stress”… or a sign that you need real clarity (ADHD, learning concerns, or diagnostic questions)
When these patterns take over, life gets smaller. You start avoiding things you used to handle. You overthink decisions. You push through until you’re depleted. You may even start questioning yourself—your resilience, your judgment, your capacity. And the advice that other people offer (“just relax,” “don’t think about it,” “be grateful”) can make you feel even more alone, because it doesn’t touch what’s actually happening inside your nervous system.
I’m a PhD clinical psychologist (in the process of registration), trained at Simon Fraser University, with a year-long clinical residency and specialized training in CBT and DBT, and additional training in ACT and Motivational Interviewing.
My approach is evidence-based, but it’s also human: collaborative, practical, and grounded in the belief that you don’t have to be “perfectly regulated” to deserve support. I also have training in Indigenous cultural safety and work to offer culturally safe, identity-affirming care—especially when the stress you’re carrying is tied to culture, race, or belonging.
Here’s what working together can look like. We start with a free consult so you can share what’s been going on and we can check fit—no pressure, no commitment.
Then we get clear on the pattern: what’s happening in your thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and stress responses, and what tends to trigger or maintain it. From there, we choose a path that matches your goals.
If you’re looking for therapy, I integrate CBT, DBT, ACT, and Motivational Interviewing—blended to fit you, not a one-size-fits-all protocol.
That might mean learning how to unhook from spirals and intrusive thoughts, strengthening emotion regulation for when feelings hit hard, working through trauma impacts with pacing that respects your system, or building a steadier sense of self when identity and cultural stress are pulling you in different directions.
If what you want is clarity, I also offer psychological assessment for children (6+), teens, adults, and seniors, including ADHD and learning concerns, and broader diagnostic clarification.
Assessments can help you stop guessing, understand what’s going on, and make informed decisions about supports, accommodations, or next steps.
Services are offered virtually (therapy) with afternoon and evening availability, and I provide care in English and Punjabi. I’m currently accepting new clients.
If you’re ready for things to feel more manageable—less spinning, more steadiness—and you want support that’s both culturally aware and evidence-based, book a free consult. We’ll start by making sense of what you’re experiencing, and then build a plan that helps you move forward.
I am currently in the process of transferring my registration as a clinical psychologist from British Columbia to Ontario; until then I will be supervised and working under the license of Dr. Christine Korol C.Psych.

I currently completing my Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University. My approach focuses on helping clients understand the underlying causes of mental and emotional imbalance in their lives. Together, we then identify the tools and strategies best suited to support meaningful change and promote a greater sense of balance moving forward.
I work with adolescents (12+ - 18) and adults (18 - 65+) navigating anxiety, depression, burnout, and the kind of inner conflict that comes from trying to meet external expectations while staying true to yourself. My clients often show up feeling disconnected from their own emotions, unsure how to ask for support, or stuck in patterns that no longer serve them.
I’ve walked through my own difficult seasons—losing parents early, managing the fallout of substance use and panic disorder in the family, and leading a business where decisions impacted real people’s lives. These experiences help me meet my clients with compassion, patience, and a sense of grounded perspective. I listen deeply, ask thoughtful questions, and help you map out a way forward that feels authentic and achievable.
In sessions, I use evidence-based strategies from CBT, ACT, DBT, and mindfulness, but I also believe in bringing humour and flexibility to the process. My goal is to help you make sense of what’s going on internally, and support you in making meaningful change.
If you’re feeling stuck, burnt out, or just ready to talk, let’s start there. You don’t have to do it alone.

Meet Dr. Christine Korol, C.Psych.(BC, Alberta, Yukon and CPBAO #4066513 Ontario)
CBT for anxiety, OCD, and stress in adults and children.
Hi! I’m Christine.
Tech nerd. Love gadgets. Once worked in a digital health start-up, so I get the pressure-cooker stress of that world.
I love making art and it is one of my favourite ways to meditate. Reality TV = my not-so-guilty pleasure.
Coffee enthusiast. I worked at Starbucks when I was a student just so I could learn how to make a good latte at home!
OCD runs in my family (me included), so I truly understand what it’s like to wrestle with intrusive thoughts.
Mom to young adult kids who also inherited my OCD (it’s genetic) so yes — I get the family side of it too.
Adjunct Professor in Psychology at UBC, and a CACBT-certified CBT therapist with over 20 years of experience. Previously worked at BC Children’s Hospital, VGH, Alberta Children’s Hospital and Foothills Medical Centre.
I know what it’s like to live with anxiety and OCD. Panic attacks, racing thoughts, sleepless nights — I’ve been there. That’s why I take a compassionate, practical approach to therapy. Clients tell me they feel safe with me because I “get it” — and because I believe humor and warmth belong in therapy as much as clinical expertise.
If you’re tired of anxiety running the show, I’d love to help you find relief and a little more peace along the way.

Sometimes life can be challenging; sometimes those challenges can be overwhelming. Entering therapy is a critical step to regaining control and directing your life back onto your chosen path. I provide my clients with a safe and non-judgemental space to examine their lives, and start on the journey back to a healthier, more satisfactory way of living. This is a collaborative effort; my job is not to tell you what to do, but to help guide the discovery of what will work best for you.
I provide counselling and psychotherapy for adults and couples experiencing psychological, emotional, and relationship distress. Common difficulties are anxiety, depression, stress, communication problems, grief and loss, trauma, and existential issues regarding creating meaning in one’s life. These issues can cause impairment at work, school, and in our day-to-day interactions with other people, or make you feel “stuck” and unable to move your life forward in a way that is authentic, healthy, and congruent with your values. I am comfortable working with people of diverse ethnic, racial, and religious backgrounds, as well as people in the LGBTQQ2SIA+ community. My experience includes assessment and treatment in hospital inpatient as well as outpatient populations, community mental health, and private practice. I have experience with psychodiagnostic assessment, sex and couples therapy, group therapy, and individual therapy for anxiety, depression, and personality disorders, and trauma therapy for members of the RCMP and Canadian Armed Forces. I take an integrative approach to therapy, and my therapeutic modalities include cognitive-behavioural (CBT), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), acceptance & commitment therapy (ACT), psychodynamic, and existential/humanistic. When working with couples, I focus of issues of emotional connection and communication, and my treatment approach is informed by the research of John Gottman. As therapy progresses, we will check in together to ensure our approach is working and modify if necessary. I am currently providing services at Ottawa River Integrated Mental Health under the supervision of Dr. Paul Grunberg, C. Psych., and Dr. Kimberly Sogge, C. Psych.

Sometimes we can get caught in the spiral of our thoughts; at times we stand at the edge of the spiral, noticing but not quite believing what our inner critic has to say, and other times we just downfall, hitting the bottom with a hard thump, unsure how we’ll climb back out again. Our patterns of thinking are shaped by our experiences, our beliefs about ourselves, and the world around us. These naturally effect how we feel, and the behaviours we engage with. If you’re feeling exhausted by trying but never quite finding a way out of the spiral, you’re not alone, and it’s not easy. But there is hope, thanks to a little thing we like to call neuroplasticity -our brain’s incredible ability to transform and change. With therapy, practice, and a ton of self-compassion, we can get there.
I hold a Master’s degree of Educational Counselling from the University of Ottawa. My career path thus far has led me to work in college and university settings, within a medical rehabilitation clinic treating clients with complex care needs, and eventually in private practice. My work in private practice has enabled me to gain experience with a variety of mental health concerns, including, but not limited to, trauma, grief, interpersonal challenges, anxiety and depression. Recently, I obtained additional training and certification in perinatal mental health (everything from fertility challenges, to pregnancy, birth, postpartum and beyond), to address the unique challenges that can arise during this season of life.
My therapeutic approach is strongly influenced by third wave psychotherapy, which includes Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Having also trained in Psychodynamic psychotherapy, I often pull from this approach to help clients develop greater self-awareness and understanding. With over a decade of experience, I offer a safe space for clients, where we can work together to explore your thoughts, emotions, and patterns of coping/functioning that may no longer be serving you. I believe healing happens through feeling and connecting with others in a deep, meaningful way. That is why I strive to offer a warm, compassionate, and non-judgemental approach to clients, where they can feel seen, understood, and cared for. The diversity and richness of my career as a therapist so far, has enabled me to walk alongside many clients and witness their bravery in sharing their stories. I consider myself immensely privileged to share a part of their journey through healing.
If reading this has resonated with you and has ignited a sense of hope for change in bringing you closer to yourself and the life you imagine, I am more than happy to connect with you. I am fluent in both English and French, enabling me to provide therapy in your preferred language.

Life can feel heavy when you’re constantly carrying responsibilities, showing up for others, and pushing through the pain. On the outside, you may look like you’ve got it together—but inside, you might feel overwhelmed, disconnected, or simply exhausted from holding it all in. Maybe it’s anxiety, grief, past trauma, or relationship struggles that leave you wondering if anyone truly understands what it’s like to feel stuck.
I’m Almarine Thomas, a Registered Psychotherapist (MACP, RP, BSW, RSW). I work with people who are ready to stop just “getting by” and start living with more authenticity and purpose. Many of my clients come to me weighed down by shame, guilt, or the belief that they’re either “too much” or “not enough.” These painful stories can feel real and consuming—but they don’t have to define you.
My approach is compassionate, collaborative, and grounded in curiosity. I use a variety of therapeutic methods—including CBT, DBT, EFT, Narrative Therapy, and trauma‑focused care—to meet you where you are. For those navigating Christian or spiritual challenges, I also offer faith‑based support. Above all, I provide a safe, non‑judgmental space where you can begin to heal and grow.
Therapy isn’t about “fixing” you—it’s about helping you reconnect with yourself, understand the patterns that keep you stuck, and build new ways of living that feel aligned with who you truly are. Whether you’re facing grief, anxiety, depression, or relationship challenges, I’ll walk alongside you with warmth and support.
If you’re ready to move beyond surviving and start living with intention, I invite you to take that first step. You don’t have to carry it alone.

“I know what it’s like to feel like you’re never quite enough—no matter how hard you try. I’ve lived it, and I’ve found the way through.”
Do you find yourself stuck in a cycle of striving—always trying to be perfect, to please everyone, yet somehow falling short of your own expectations? If your mind feels like a constant critic, if you’re exhausted from trying to do everything “right,” you’re not alone. I’ve been there.
Before I became a psychologist, my life was a symphony of high standards and self-doubt. As a musician, I chased perfection in every note, every performance. Later, as a young adult, I was “Mr. Nice Guy”—overcommitted, anxious, and seeking approval. Often I would replay conversations, worrying if I disappointed someone or made a mistake. I know the toll that anxiety and perfectionism can take on your relationships, your work, and your sense of self.
With nearly three decades in clinical psychology—leading hospital teams, teaching future therapists, and helping hundreds of clients—I’ve learned what actually helps. My approach is warm, practical, and rooted in evidence-based strategies like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), but I also trust my intuition to guide you toward what you truly need. Most importantly, I believe no one is broken. We’re all doing our best, and therapy is a place for understanding, not judgment.
My clients often tell me, “You really get me.” That’s because I do. I know how hard it is to ask for help when you’re used to being the dependable one. I know what it feels like to believe relief isn’t possible. But it is.
If you’re ready to stop living for other people’s approval and start feeling good about yourself—without the constant worry—reach out today. Let’s talk about how you can finally move forward.
Ready to let go of the struggle and discover what “good enough” really feels like? Book a confidential consult with me, and let’s find your path to relief.

Meet Dr. Mari Shanahan Somerville, Ph.D.
Clinical Psychologist (Supervised Practice)
Under the Supervision of Dr. Kimberly Sogge, C.Psych. and Dr. Paul Grunberg, C.Psych.
I believe that the human mind is an exceptionally powerful thing. Each of us sees the world through the frames of our minds, which are coloured by the varied experiences of our past. Although at times it may not feel like it, we have the power to build new lenses and to interact with the world, others, and ourselves in different ways. While we cannot change past experiences, we can change how we understand and respond to their echoes in our present lives. I view therapy as an opportunity to step into this kind of self-leadership — to meet yourself with compassion, curiosity, and strength as you explore these new ways of relating.
I hold a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Concordia University and bring over eight years of experience working with individuals across the lifespan in a variety of settings, including private practice, community mental health, school-based care, psychiatric hospitals, and on a Mohawk reserve. This breadth of experience has taught me that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to healing. Your story is unique, and your therapy should be too.
In our work together, I will draw from a blend of evidence-based approaches, including Third Wave Cognitive Behavioural Therapies, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Mindful Self-Compassion, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT). Together, we will find the tools and perspectives that best support your needs and your goals.
At the heart of my approach is a deep respect for the pace and process of each individual. I know it can take time to feel safe with a new person and I strive to honour the time you need to feel safe in exploring your inner world. It is my honour to be able to meet you where you are and help to guide you on a path of self-discovery and healing. My commitment is to offer a non-judgmental, compassionate space where you can show up fully as yourself — and where your voice and wisdom are always central to the process.
Choosing to begin therapy is an act of courage and resilience. If you’re ready to take this step, I would be honored to walk alongside you on this path of self-discovery and healing.

“In any given moment, we have two options, to step forward into growth or to step back into safety” - Abraham Maslow
I feel most truly myself when I am exploring, whether it is paddling a canoe in backwoods Algonquin Park, walking a pilgrimage in Japan, or learning how to navigate the landscape of the human mind. I am a firm believer in living life as an adventure, and there is a kind of grace that comes when we take the risk to move out of our comfort zones, confront our fears, and take ownership of the way our story is going to unfold next. It is in moments of profound stillness, deepest emotions and scariest choices that we tap into the expansiveness of our potential. I see therapy as a stepping stone for growth, and self-awareness as an essential component of an adventurous life.
As a career coach for two decades, I inspired my clients to take control of their professional path, whether by seeking a new job, competing for a promotion, or pursuing a radical change. I was motivated to complete my master’s degree in counselling psychology out of a desire to help people find meaning and direction in all areas of their life. Sometimes this involves healing lingering wounds, sometimes it involves finding a path forward through major life transitions, sometimes it is involves getting unstuck from ways of being that are no longer working. My treatment approach is eclectic and integrative, and I see myself as your companion and collaborator in your healing process. I offer you presence, insight and compassion, and the specialized tools such as Internal Family Systems, Narrative Therapy, and Acceptance Commitment Therapy that help you do the deep work of self discovery. You set the pace, the mile-markers and the direction for your transformation.
